Note to Guardians

Front Cover

Reading is important for the development of children. This can be the case whether the child is reading themselves, or if a guardian is reading to them. Thus, I encourage guardians to read to their children, and guardians should encourage their children to read themselves as well. But either way, I recommend and encourage a guardian being involved in some way since this maximizes the opportunity for the child's development. It can even help develop a better relationship between guardian and child. So either you as the guardian can read to your child, or your child can be the one reading to you.

As the guardian, you can help teach what certain words mean if the child doesn't yet understand them. Or, if the child doesn't understand an aspect of the story, you can explain that to them too. Not only that, but you will have the opportunity to help them understand any lessons that might be there in the story for the child to learn. I encourage asking them questions such as what they thought about the character's actions, and getting their perspective. Also, give them your perspective as well. Such discussions can help clarify and/or elaborate on any of the lessons that might be taught in the story. Doing so can help grow their intellect, empower them with wisdom, and strengthen their moral character.

As for creating a better relationship, reading can create a stronger bond between guardian and child. I can’t stress this enough. Children, especially young children, enjoy when their guardians are involved in their playtime, whether that’s playing with action figures, dolls, games, etc. It creates happy moments in their lives. Being involved with your child’s reading can have the effect of them associating more positive moments with your presence. This can even extend beyond the reading experience. For example, you and your child might enjoy not only the story, but talking about the story, and even the experience of picking out their next book.

Trust me. I know quite a bit about how children benefit from their guardians being involved in their reading. Some of my very fond memories are my mother and father reading to me, and me reading to them. This is a part of your child’s life that you don’t want to miss.

I also want to say that spending time with your children when reading, and in particular when discussing the story with them, can also have the added benefit of creating continued interest in reading. We want children to read more than just one book. The more interested that they are, the more reading that they will do, and the more they will continue to develop.

And lastly, I also recommend that your child has at least one of their plushies with them while reading this story. :)

Thank you for reading.
-Phillip Keenan
