Indeed, adolescent readers might very well enjoy these books, but we don't classify them as simply belonging to a more mature age group. The main reason for this is because the stories are still very much child-oriented. First of all, while My First Novels stories are longer than our standard stories, they're still pretty short. And while they're more complex too, they're still pretty simple. Furthermore, while adolescent books typically have some degree of profanity, more intense violence, and some sexual content, My First Novels books do not. My First Novels books are still meant for children. You can think of them somewhat like a book that's between a typical children's book and a novel meant for adolescents.
The purpose of the My First Novels books is to give children a choice, and a chance for them to get more out of my stories. Some children like reading more than others, and they can enjoy more complex stories. My First Novels books are for these children; advanced readers who can benefit from longer and more complex stories but who are still children who require books that are still meant for children. And while not an actual novel, a My First Novels book is meant to feel like one, helping children to feel proud because they're reading a "big person's" book, and can ultimately motivate them to read even more...which is a great thing.
1. The Conception of My First Novels
As a big writer, it's challenging for me to write short stories, which is basically a requirement for children's stories. I love writing them, but it can be frustrating trying to keep the stories short while at the same time entertaining, educational, and meaningful. Sometimes I'm writing these children's stories with with lovely plots, but I begin to find that they're just way too long; sometimes up to 60 or more pages, and sometimes I think that your average child might not even appreciate the complexity that I'm putting into it. And so, I have to cut out scenes and dialogue, which can be painful...and difficult. In fact, you might see that my children's books are a bit longer than average children's books. Sometimes, I just have to start all over. And while I never finish a story unless I'm fully satisfied with the outcome, there are plenty of times when I miss a lot of the story that I was trying to tell.
