In fact, I already had so many already, and had a very good character that I loved, and I knew others would love too. It was Bonzo! Bonzo is a plush monkey, and is actually based on my real life stuffed animal that I got when I was just a baby. All my life, he was my best friend, and he's always been a major character of mine for many of my creative projects. I used to make a whole bunch of Bonzo games, and I always envisioned Bonzo as the mascot for my future video game company that I dreamed about. But perhaps utilizing Bonzo would no longer be just a dream. I could use Bonzo as my mascot for my bakery, and I could decorate cakes with him!
I got excited again. The thought of decorating cakes and cookies with my Bonzo for children's birthday parties acted as a strong push to start learning how to do it professionally. But then…another thought hit me, and even though I was super excited one minute, I suddenly became disappointed the next. You see, I realized something else. No one knew Bonzo. Nobody had any idea who he was. I fantasized about children running into the bakery with their mothers excited to get a Bonzo cake, but the truth was, no children out there actually cared about Bonzo, and thus, no child was ever going to want a Bonzo cake.
It was a sad reality, and once again, I felt like a dream was being squashed. I felt like I just didn't have a chance here. But I'm persistent, and I thought long and hard about the problem. I knew that character and brand recognition took time. Maybe if I started using Bonzo in my bakery, children would eventually start liking them, but who knows how long that would take. 10 years? 20 years? And that's even if they got popular at all. And so I started thinking about how all these other characters got so popular, and so quickly. And then I realized that they had advantages that my characters didn't. Characters like Superman and Batman had comic books, movies, TV shows, toys…Mickey Mouse had all those things plus entire theme parks. I had none of them. Not even a book.
And then a light bulb went off inside me. Well why not a book? I knew that I wasn't going to have any theme park any time soon, but I realized that all these characters got their start from somewhere, most notably, a story, so why not create my own Bonzo story? I could create a children's book or two about Bonzo, and sell them at my bakery in order to make him more popular with kids!
