One night in 2022, while at work during some down time, I was thinking about how cool it would be to have my own bakery since I was so into baking. Again, I knew this was way down the road, and it wasn't my priority. I was actually making a huge game, and that was my priority at the time, but it was fun to think about. So I started thinking about how the storefront would look, I thought about what I would call the business, I thought about all the food items that I'd offer on the menu, what the menu itself would look like, how much I'd be charging, incentive programs…every aspect of the business, I was thinking about, and while I knew that such a feat was way into the future, I was having fun thinking about it.
I paid special attention to how I would be decorating. I started getting excited thinking about how I could decorate cookies and cakes for children's birthday parties, and I thought about all of the designs that I would offer. And then I thought, it would be so cool to be able to offer to frost these cakes with Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Mickey Mouse, and all sorts of characters that children love. I'd just have to learn how to do it.
But then I had a sudden thought. Aren't Superman, Batman, Mickey Mouse, and all those characters copyrighted? Would it be legal for me to offer those designs? I was kind of hoping that that wouldn't be the case, but kind of knew it was, and honestly, that would actually be for the best. If I owned certain characters, I wouldn't feel right about anyone using them for their own business. In any case, sure enough, after a little research, I found that it was indeed illegal to offer such designs. Of course, I could possibly purchase a license, but even if that was available, it'd probably be way out of my budget.
Believe it or not, even though this bakery idea was way into the future, and I haven't even learned how to properly decorate a cake yet, this new knowledge really bummed me out. It made me sad because it just seemed like it was another way to squash an opportunity to do something special in my life. It was like, I was so excited one minute, and then realized it was too good to be true the next.
But, I'm a problem-solver, and so I didn't let it get me too down while I thought about a solution. And then it hit me. Why the heck do I need other persons' or other companies' characters? I'm a creative person, I thought to myself. I've been making my own characters my whole life. Ever since I was little I made my own characters. I made my own super heroes, my own villains, and many others. I realized that I didn't need to rely on others' characters. I could make up my own.
