Story Master's Position on Artificial Intelligence

Just to illustrate what I’m talking about, I had a story line in which the main character was supposed to be wealthy. Now, art is a funny thing because the style of the art can give off certain emotions. For example, when I see illustrations that look like traditional oil paintings, I feel a sense of warmth and love. That kind of art style is clearly meant for a particular kind of story line. Whereas an illustration that looks more cartoony makes me think of a more lighthearted or comedic story. Upon seeing the artist’s illustration proof for this story of mine, it somehow made it look as if the character was poor instead; not by making him look malnourished or wearing torn clothes, or anything like that; it was just the style of the art alone. Like I said, usually I would not change the premise of my story over something like that, but I loved the art style so much, and I started thinking that perhaps the character being poor would make a better story, and so I decided to change it.

I enjoy the fact that each illustration is a work of art and expression that particularly the ones who created it can be proud of. I would truly miss every one of them if I ever decided to use A.I.

There’s something else to consider about using A.I. for art. There’s a problem with having A.I. do the work that bothers me. I must admit that I find it a bit difficult to explain exactly what that something is, but I will try my best. I mentioned before how when somebody uses A.I., the results are soulless because it loses the human aspect. Thus, we lose the ability to connect to someone behind the work, and we lose the ability to find meaning in it.

Similarly, when someone uses A.I. to do the work specifically, I feel that we lose something else in addition to that. What we lose exactly I’m not really sure, but perhaps we lose the ability to be in awe over the value of human achievement. There’s just something special about art being created by actual persons. Art that is created by a person is something that’s more amazing; more wonderful, and thus, more valuable. Just think about the skill, the education, the effort, and the dedication that goes into making works of art. That deserves our respect, and it’s a reminder of the great accomplishments that humans are able to achieve.

This isn’t to say that any type of art created by A.I. can’t be enjoyed. Nor am I saying that it can’t serve a purpose. It certainly can. But my point has nothing to do with enjoyment or purpose, rather certain feelings and sentiments that A.I. doing all the work eliminates or degrades. Art created by artificial intelligence in this way wouldn’t be as valuable. Something important would be missing. What exactly is missing I’m not sure I can say, but I feel emptier when I know that the art I’m experiencing was created by A.I.
