ith the recent surge of popularity and use of artificial intelligence for writing and illustration, I wanted to inform my audience and potential audience of what my thoughts are on the matter, as well as Story Master’s position, and what role, if any, artificial intelligence plays in my books.
First off, what is artificial intelligence…Artificial Intelligence, or A.I., is the intelligence of machinery. It can also be described as programming that imitates the intelligence of persons, including the abilities to learn and make decisions. Some examples of using A.I. is a computer playing against you during a game of Chess, creating music and art without you designing or doing any of the work yourself, and a computer quickly figuring out complex problems in the fields of math and science that would normally take humans years to solve on their own.
I don’t think of artificial intelligence as being good, nor do I think of it as being bad. It’s the way it’s used that determines whether it’s good or bad. And when determining if the use of artificial intelligence is okay or not, we have to ask a few questions. First of all, is it effective for the job that it’s supposed to do? Second, is it morally okay? And third, is it okay to use in principle; meaning, are there still reasons that we should or shouldn’t be using it even if it’s morally acceptable. To illustrate what I mean by principle, we can say that there’s nothing immoral about you punching yourself, but it’s something you shouldn’t do nevertheless.
I have a lot to say about artificial intelligence, but the main purpose here is to talk about it in relation to Story Master, so I will only discuss how A.I. relates to this business, particularly when it comes to story writing and illustration. Note that I’ll be talking about art in this article, but art in this context includes anything within the realm of creativity; not just paintings, drawings, illustrations, etc, but also music, poetry, and even stories and games.
But what is so attractive about A.I. when it comes to story writing and illustration? Well, A.I. can assist artists in creating an author’s or illustrator’s work, but not only that; A.I. can do the work for them. This is of course easier and faster than doing it yourself, and it allows for someone to create a work of art that they’ve designed, but lack the skill necessary to do, as well as making it cheaper than hiring someone else who does have the skill, which also means that they don’t have to put up with any inconveniences of working with anyone. Of course, there’s another thing about A.I. that can make it attractive. A.I. makes it very easy to create amazing art without doing any of the work, but to pretend that you did, and take credit for it.
I generally dislike the use of artificial intelligence for art purposes. So let’s look at and talk about the reasons why.
